This was initially intended to be a documentary about the Butte County Humane Society in Chico, California. Instead, as I started shooting, I found that portraits of the animals themselves would be far more interesting. I was struck with the multitude of personalities of the dogs at the shelter, as well as the variety of species available. With great support, understanding, and help from the staff, I began taking the dogs to my studio. I soon discovered the undeniable human presence in these so called animals. Whether by domestication, past experiences, or both, each one clearly exhibits different emotions which are readily apparent, instantly relatable, and totally unique.
